Your unforgettable 2-day Inca Trail trek begins early in the morning with a hotel pickup from Cusco between 4:00 and 6:00 am, depending on train schedules. A scenic drive through the Sacred Valley brings us to Ollantaytambo, where you’ll board the Expedition train to Kilometer 104—the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail hike.

At an altitude of 2,170 meters (7,120 feet), this gateway marks the beginning of your guided two-day hike to Machu Picchu. After checking in at the trail control point, we begin with a guided visit to the archaeological site of Chachabamba, nestled in the lush Urubamba Valley. Here, you'll learn about its historic role in Inca culture before we ascend into a biodiverse cloud forest, home to colorful orchids, exotic ferns, hummingbirds, and, with some luck, even spectacled bears.

The trail gains steady elevation—part of the overall Inca Trail 2 days elevation gain—as we reach the breathtaking Wiñay Wayna archaeological site. This well-preserved gem showcases ceremonial terraces, temples, and ancient aqueducts. After a guided exploration, we enjoy a delicious organic box lunch near the last campsite used by 4-day Inca Trail hikers, who spend their final night here.

From Wiñay Wayna, the journey continues for approximately two hours along original Inca stone paths, culminating at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)—the highest point of the trail. From here, you’ll witness your first sweeping views of Machu Picchu, bathed in golden afternoon light and free from the usual crowds. The inca trail day 2 elevation gain pays off here, with panoramic photo opportunities from Circuit 1, widely considered the best lookout point for iconic shots of the Citadel.

After soaking in the scenery and capturing your first glimpses of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, we descend for around 45 minutes to the bus station, where we board a shuttle down to Aguas Calientes. Here, you’ll check into a comfortable 2-star hotel, enjoy a hearty dinner, and toast the day’s adventure with a Pisco Sour. For those seeking relaxation, a visit to the local hot springs is available (optional).
